Program Overview

The Bachelor of Arts – Visual Arts – Art History program at York University is ideal for students who are passionate about the history, theory, and cultural impact of art. This program explores a wide range of art movements, from ancient to contemporary, and examines how visual culture reflects and shapes society. You’ll study art across cultures, learn how to analyze visual works, and gain a strong understanding of critical theory and research methods. Whether you’re interested in museums, galleries, education, or curating, this program offers a strong foundation for a career in the arts and culture sector.

Program Structure

This 4-year full-time degree program includes a balance of historical, theoretical, and critical coursework.
 

Students will:

  • Explore Western and non-Western art traditions, from ancient to modern times
  • Develop visual literacy and research skills
  • Engage in seminars, discussions, and studio visits
  • Have opportunities to specialize in areas such as modern art, Canadian art, or global visual culture
  • Take elective courses from across the university to broaden perspectives
  • Optional: Choose a French-language option (Études en français)
