Academic Requirements

To apply for the Bachelor of Interior Design program at BCIT, applicants must meet specific Academic Requirements. The program is competitive, and successful applicants typically hold a Full-Time Diploma in Interior Design from BCIT or have exceeded the entrance requirements with a Part-Time Diploma in Interior Design from BCIT.

Competitive Entry: Two-step process

Preference is given to applicants with a BCIT Diploma in Interior Design who are continuing their studies full-time.

Step 1: Meet the following entrance requirements

• Post-secondary education: One of the following options must be met:
  • Option 1: BCIT Interior Design diploma with:
    • 65% in all INTD courses
    • 65% in INTD 3260 - Revit for Interior Design
    • 65% in INTD 3460 - Virtual Reality for Interior Design
    • 50% in ENGL 1177 - Academic Writing
    • 50% in LIBS 7001 - Critical Reading and Writing
    • 3.0 credits of General Education electives
  • Option 2: Non-BCIT Interior Design diploma or degree with:
    • Completion of a Diploma in Interior Design from another public or private post-secondary institution in Canada with a minimum grade of 65% in all interior design courses.
• Submit a portfolio: A maximum of ten double-sided pages showcasing student projects or industry-related work, demonstrating a cross-section of skills.
• International applicants: This program is available to international applicants. A valid BCIT study permit is required prior to starting the program. Students must complete the mandatory work component to qualify for graduation, which requires a co-op work permit.
• Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

Language Requirements

To apply for the Interior Design Bachelor Degree program at BCIT, you must demonstrate proficiency in English. The following English Language Proficiency assessments are accepted for Category 2, which is the required level for this program:

• English Studies 12 or English First People 12 or Acceptable equivalent high school course - 67%
• BCIT English Competency Assessment:
  • COMM 0015 – English Competency Assessment and COMM 0033 – English Speaking and Listening Assessment - 70%
• COMM 1009 – Technical Writing: Definitions, Instructions and Process Descriptions - 67%
• COMM 1106 – Introduction to Business and Technical Communication (With Language Development Component) - 67%
• BCIT Professional English Language Development (PELD):
  • COMM 0030 – Speaking and Listening Skills for EAL Students 2 and COMM 0005 – Technical Communication Skills for EAL Students 4 - 70%
• Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Test - 70 overall band score with no component below 60
• International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - Overall score 6.5 with no band less than 5.5
• Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) - Overall score 60 with no skill score less than 60
• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT) - Overall score 86 with no section score less than 20
