Academic Requirements

For the Bachelor of Science - Nursing - Compressed (RFN) program, the following Academic Requirements apply:

• Minimum GPA: Not explicitly mentioned, but students should aim for a strong academic record.
• International students must meet specific requirements based on their educational background.
• For students from Vietnam, a minimum average of 7.0 in Grade 12 (only academic courses are taken into average calculation) is required.
• English language proficiency test results are normally required for direct admission to undergraduate studies. However, students in the CBSE curriculum are exempted from providing English Language Proficiency test.
• For the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, the following prerequisite courses must be present: English, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics.
• Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

Applicants must hold sufficient post-secondary study (university or college) to qualify for the compressed stream.

Prerequisite courses include: biology, chemistry, mathematics, English (or equivalent), and an introductory psychology course (PSYC 1020H & 1030H or equivalent) for university-transfer applicants. For example: one semester of biology, chemistry, math, English each (minimum 60%) plus 1.0 full credit in Introductory Psychology and 2.0 credits at the 1000 level and 1.0 at the 2000 level.

Minimum average requirements: for university transfer applicants to the compressed program: a minimum average of 70% (GPA around 2.7/4.0) calculated on the last 10 full credits (two years of undergraduate study). Prerequisites must have been completed within the last 10 years.

For applicants from a Practical Nursing diploma: minimum average of 75% (GPA 3.0/4.0) in the PN diploma, registration in good standing with the relevant nursing regulatory body if required.

Language Requirements

At Trent University, it is essential for students to demonstrate proficiency in both spoken and written English to succeed in their academic endeavors. All applicants whose first language is not English are required to provide proof of their English language proficiency through one of the accepted tests. Below are the accepted English language proficiency tests along with their respective minimum score requirements:

• TOEFL / TOEFL IBT / TOEFL IBT Special Home Edition: 86 IBT with a minimum writing score of 20.
• IELTS: 6.5, with no band below 6.0.
• The Duolingo English Test: 115 (Note: Duolingo is NOT accepted by the School of Graduate Studies at Trent, and is only applicable for Undergraduate applications.)
• CAEL | CAEL On-line: 60 (starting July 2020).
• Cambridge B2 First, C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency (Certificate of Advanced English): 176, with no sub-score below 169.
• Pearson PTE Academic In-person & Online: 59.
• Trent Academic ESL Program: Academic English II with 75% in all courses.

It is important to note that if you have results from a recognized Canadian University English language testing service, you may submit those results for consideration. Additionally, English Language Proficiency requirements are subject to change without prior notice.

For those who may qualify for exemptions from providing proof of English language proficiency, the following categories apply:

1. Completion of the International Baccalaureate diploma where English was the language of instruction.
2. Studied at least 3 years full-time in a high school where the medium of instruction is entirely English.
3. Studied at least 2 years full-time in a community college where the medium of instruction is entirely English.
4. Studied at least 1 year full-time in a university where the medium of instruction is entirely English.

Trent University reserves the right to request English proficiency test scores from any applicant, regardless of whether they meet the published exemption requirements.
