Program overview

The Bachelor of Arts - Visual and Critical Studies program at OCAD University offers students a unique opportunity to study art history at Canada’s oldest and largest art and design university. This program emphasizes the expanded field of modern and contemporary art history, covering various disciplines such as design, photography, architecture, performance, and new media, alongside traditional painting and sculpture. Students will not only engage with theoretical aspects but also have the chance to participate in studio courses, allowing them to create their own art and design works.

Program structure

The Visual and Critical Studies program is structured over a duration of four years. Throughout this time, students will experience a comprehensive curriculum that includes:

  • First Year: A foundation year with a variety of classes in art history, visual culture, design theory, and hands-on studio courses.
  • Second Year: Students will select electives and delve into topics such as art and globalization, history of modern art, contemporary art and design, and art and activism.
  • Third Year: Focus on art critical studies along with elective courses in art history, studio, or liberal arts and sciences.
  • Fourth Year: An opportunity to research and produce a major research paper, culminating in a showcase at GradEx, OCAD U’s Graduate Exhibition.

Additionally, students can choose from over 90 electives to pursue one of the 25 focused minors, enhancing their educational experience and employability.
